It affects different patients in different ways. Be open minded and find out if it is right for you. I've always got on well with it.

I was physically sick later in the day of injection of this medicine. I developed mouth inflammation within days. It caused my joints to swell ( I do have an ongoing joint problem). I lost a considerable amount of hair during the following month and this has never returned. This is incredibly strong and all of my body appeared to be reacting against it. My periods became irregular timing and length changed. They returned to normal after stopping taking this. The doctors said this was the last medicine that could help my condition and I was keen to take this and persevere with it but the side effects made my life impossible.

I started oral MTX three years ago after diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis. While quite effective in controlling RA, the side-effects were awful (nausea, diarrhoea, etc.). I was changed to sub-cutaneous MTX (I give myself an injection once a week) and have experienced far fewer problems. I have, however, suffered from pericarditis and pneumonia within the past year, and it has been strongly suggested that these were perhaps due to MTX. I had to cease MTX for several months following these conditions, but have now resumed it at a lower dose. I'm hoping all will be OK this time. My advice to others would be to take it but consult a doctor immediately if you develop the slightest sign of a chest infection. It is also essential to have regular blood tests when on MTX.

Profile

Methotrexate interferes with the growth of certain cells of the body, especially cells that reproduce quickly, such as cancer cells, bone marrow cells, and skin cells. It is used to treat certain types of cancer of the breast, skin, head and neck, or lung. It is also used to treat severe psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Methotrexate is usually given after other medications have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms.
